Carol J. Matteson, Ph.D.
President Emerita, Mount Ida College
Dr. Matteson became the fifth president of Mount Ida College, Newton, MA, on April 17, 2000, and retired in 2010 after a decade of leadership. A nationally recognized leader and champion for the advancement of higher education, she served in executive and faculty positions at public and private colleges and universities across the country.
Under her visionary leadership, Mount Ida College developed and implemented an innovative All-College Curriculum that blended professional preparation with the liberal arts to ensure that students had the skills they needed to succeed in an ever-changing world. During her tenure, the College implemented a new vision and corresponding strategic plans that resulted in the expansion of bachelor’s degree offerings, a master’s in management, increased student enrollment and the addition of a new residence hall. She spearheaded building a state-of-the-art educational facility for the Veterinary Technology program in keeping with its standing as one of the top four-year Vet Tech programs in the country.
Dr. Matteson has served as executive vice president/provost at Rowan University in New Jersey and was the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania where she also served as dean of the College of Business. At Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, she served as the assistant to the president. Dr. Matteson has also been a faculty member at Sturt College of Education (South Australia), Slippery Rock University, the University of Maine at Augusta, Rowan University and was a professor of management at Mount Ida College. She began her career teaching in the public schools in Pennsylvania.
Dr. Matteson was named a “Distinguished Educator” in Pennsylvania and received Slippery Rock University’s outstanding alumni award. She also served as a member on several boards of non-profit organizations, task forces and councils including the NCAA Division III Chancellors/Presidents Advisory Group and was the past chair of the Executive Committee for the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts.
Dr. Matteson received her Ph.D. in Business Administration from the Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh with a major in organization studies and a minor in marketing, a MS degree from the University of Oregon and a BS degree from Slippery Rock University.
