Henry M. Thomas, III established this scholarship. Mr. Thomas earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology; Masters of Arts degree in Human Resource Development from American International College; and a Jurisprudence Doctorate degree from Western New England University – School of Law. He has also received honorary Doctoral Degrees from BayPath College and Westfield State University; and completed the Senior Executive Leadership Program at the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government and Public Policy. On June 27, 2012, after serving as a member since September 2007, Mr. Thomas was appointed by Governor Deval Patrick as Chair of the Board of Trustees for the University of Massachusetts. He also currently serves as President of the Urban League of Springfield. and is a Trustee of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute, the UMass Building Authority and the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education. Mr. Thomas is a Founder and Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Trustees of the New Leadership Charter School and is Presdident/CEO of the Urgan League of Springfield, Inc. Mrs. Thomas earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the College of Our Lady of the Elms and a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. After serving as a classroom teacher for 19 years in the Springfield School system, Mrs. Thomas retired as a Vice Principal for Boland Elementary School. Further, she served as Executive Director of the Urban League’s historic Camp Atwater for 15 years. Camp Atwater is a residential summer camp experience for youth that assists in the academic and social growth and development.
