Student Parent Programs/Graduate Student Senate Summer Child Care Support

Summer Child Care Grants for Graduate Student Families

The Graduate Student Senate in collaboration with Student Parent Programs will be distributing $30,000 in childcare grants this summer to defray the cost of child care expenses and help graduate student parents focus on their educational goals. Funds for this summer child care grant were made possible by the UMass Graduate School with the help of Dean Jacqueline Urla.

Eligible expenses include those incurred or anticipated from June 1 through August 31, 2021 from the following types of care:

  • State-licensed (or equivalent) early education infant, toddler, or preschool care in center based and group home based settings
  • Summer programs including recreational summer camps and educational programs
  • Family, Friends, and Neighbors informal care and babysitting

Your child care plan may include a mix of several types of child care options – please include all that you anticipate utilizing this summer.

To qualify for this support, student parents must be actively enrolled at UMass Amherst as a graduate student on a part-time or full-time basis. Priority will go to applicants with demonstrated need (as determined by Financial Aid Services using FAFSA data or providing documentation if you are not eligible to file a FAFSA) and will factor in prior funding for child care expenses during the 2020-2021 academic year as well as eligibility for other sources of child care funding.

Funds from this grant will be awarded to qualifying applicants as a reimbursement for documented expenses. Awards will be determined based on the total applicant pool and applicant demonstrated need. Our first priority is to provide the highest possible reimbursement to applicants who fall in the lowest income levels and those who have not received prior child care funding support. We will use any remaining funds to work up the list of applicants. There is a $1,750 per child cap (for whom receipts are submitted) on the amount a family can be reimbursed for June 1- August 31, 2021 expenses.
